Total prize money: € 10.000
PORADA INTERNATIONAL DESIGN AWARD 2017, the new edition of the international competition, is focused this year on different types of small tables. The challenge is to interpret the values and identity of Porada, leading brand of Italian design, through the creation of innovative concepts for different types of small tables: end table, service table, coffee table and side table, in which the use of solid wood is prevalent(but not necessarily exclusive).
Promoted by Porada Arredi srl, a leading company in the production of furnishing accessories, and POLI.design, under the patronage of ADI, the Association for Industrial Design, the competition is open to Italian and foreign designers and creative people (individuals or groups), professionals or non-professionals, corporate employees and students. Innovation, originality and search for new design solutions for woodworking processes: these are the guidelines of the challenge.
The new call was officially launched during the Milan Design Week 2017, as part of the award ceremony for the winning projects of the fifth edition of the competition which was held at the PORADA booth at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Rho on April 5. The 2016 contest, dedicated to innovative solutions of coat hangers, raised a total of 427 applications from around the world (Italy, Iran, Russia, Ukraine, United States, Finland, Poland and Venezuela are among the countries that took part) and saw the recognition of six projects that stood out for their quality. In the Professional category the winner project is The Swaying Bamboo created by the Russian designers Bogdan Bondarenko and Yuliia Fedorenko. An hanger with a modular design made of two elements: the wall box and a rack with hook. The structure is inspired by the bamboo which symbolizes undying love, safety and well-being in the house in the Eastern philosophy. The naturalistic perspective inspired also Arborem, the project of Davide Mazza, student at Politecnico di Milano, winner in the Student category. The structure of this free-standing hanger in solid wood can be divided into three main areas: three legs to the base, the central node and branched arms, to recall the sinuous shape of a tree.
Projects relating to the edition 2017 must be original and unpublished, they must enhance the use of production technologies and woodworking processes and typical finishing of the solid wood. The projects should also comply with specific functionality, with the current safety standards, with ergonomic characteristics, with both environmental and sustainable design characteristics.
Wood, whether in natural-finish, preferably in finishes prevalently used by the company, or painted, can be combined with metal, mirrors, crystals, leather, hides or fabric.
A jury composed of renowned experts in the field will judge and select the winning projects. In evaluating the entries, the judges will take into account: their originality, the degree of innovation and pursuit of new design solutions related to the processes typically used for solid wood, experimentation with materials and surface finishes, the capacity of projects to define and anticipate scenarios of use and innovative concepts in the use of wooden furniture and contemporary furnishings, with particular regard to typological, technological and morphological decisions.
The jury will choose three winners for each of the two categories (Students and Professionals) in the competition, who will receive their awards at a dedicated event.
The total prize money of € 10.000 will be allocated as follows:
1st prize: € 3.000
2nd prize: € 2.000
3rd prize: € 1.000
1st prize: € 2.000
2nd prize: € 1.200
3rd prize: € 800
The winning projects of the competition will also be prototyped and possibly produced by Porada at a later stage.
