The second phase of the project to create a Design and Innovation centre in Mérida, capital of the Mexican State of Yucatán.

From 26th February to 2nd March 2018, a delegation composed of the Head of International Affairs Office of POLI.design Paola Galdi and professors and doctors of the Design Department of Politecnico di Milano, Venanzio Arquilla, Giovanni Maria Conti and Martina Motta, travelled to Mérida for three Pilot Workshops in collaboration with three companies in the Textile-Clothing sector associated with the Cámara Nacional de la Industria del Vestido (CANAIVE)Aleph IndustrieAbito and Caruso-Moliterno.
The objective of the workshop: to create a structured design method for the work teams, through the implementation of a capsule collection co-created with POLI.design. Starting from the characteristics of the territory, these capsule collections were able to use stylistic elements evocative of Yucatán identity, to be assimilated and then applied independently to all future collections.
The mission was also an opportunity to discuss future strategies related to the creation of a Design and Innovation centre in Mérida and hold a series of conferences on the themes of Design, Innovation and Made in Italy at the Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán (UADY), l’Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana (UTM) and Universidad Marista di Mérida and Cámara Nacional de la Industria de la Transformación (CANACINTRA).

The genesis of the project:
The project was born as a feasibility study begun in July 2016 related to the Yucatán textile products along with the Secretaría de Investigación, Innovación y Educación Superior of Mérida and the Camera Nazionale dell’Abbigliamento dello Yucatán (CANAIVE).  This on-site analysis focused on the visit to and mapping of 6 excellent businesses related to the textile sector, which are part of CANAIVE. During the same mission in July, a seminar was also organised on the theme "Trends in the fashion industry, best practices in creative design and integration into the global market", conducted by Prof. Giovanni Maria Conti, which allowed the primary sharing and transmission of some content related to the fashion design theme.

Starting from this feasibility analysis of July 2016 and a subsequent visit to Milan, in October 2016 a Yucatán delegation composed of the Governor of the State of Yucatán, Rolando Zapata Bello, the President of Consejo Coordinador Empresarial of Yucatán, Mario Can Marín, and the Secretario de Investigación, Innovación y Educación Superior of the State Government, Raúl Godoy Montañez,  which put in place a secondary goal relating to the creation of a Design and innovation centre in Yucatán, both for the textile sector and for the other productive sectors that represent the local businesses of Yucatán.

With this new and secondary purpose, a delegation composed of the Head of the International Affairs Office of POLI.design Paola Galdi along with Professors of the Design Department of the Politecnico di Milano Venanzio Arquilla and Giovanni Maria Conti carried out an additional on-site mission in Mérida from 6th to 9th February 2017.
The objective of this mission was to co-produce, together with the Secretaría de Investigación, Innovación y Educación Superior of Mérida, a strategic plan for the creation of the future Design and Innovation Centre in Merida, as well as to create some teaching moments related to the topic of design and innovation. Specifically, two seminars were held.
The first, "Analysis for the creation of the Yucatán Design Centre (Yucatán trademark)", was organised in cooperation with the Secretaría de Investigación, Innovación y Educación Superior de Yucatán at the headquarters of the Dirección General de Educación Superior (DGES), and was intended to define concepts and strategies for the future Centre of design and innovation in Yucatán.

The second seminar, conducted by the Prof. Venanzio Arquilla, was the real "Introduction to Design" targeted at officials and professors from the most important public and private higher education institutions of the state of Yucatán and operators in the sector and took place at the Parque Cientifico Tecnologico de Yucatán (PTCY).
At the same time, the POLI.design delegation had the opportunity of meeting representatives of businesses, institutions and trade associations from across the country, such as, for example, the Cámara Nacional de la Industria del Calzado (CANAICAL) and the Hub IYEM- Instituto Yucateco de Emprendedores.
The visit was also an opportunity to meet with academic representatives and visit the campuses of prestigious Yucatán Athenaeums such as Universidad Anáhuac Mayab, Universidad Modelo, Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana (UTM), Facultad de Arquitectura Uady and Universidad Marista.
To facilitate these meetings and visits, the Minister, Dr Raúl Godoy Montañéz, Secretario de Investigación, Innovación y Educación Superior and Engineer Ricardo Bello, Director General de Educación Superior de la Secretaría de Investigación, Innovación y Educación Superior and former rector of the UTM of Merida were all present.

Meanwhile, the third on-site mission was carried out from 23rd to 27th October 2017, a week in which the professors of Politecnico di Milano Giovanni Maria Conti and Rossana Gaddi conducted a co-design workshop to reflect on the theme of the creation of the Brand Identity of the future Centre, definition of the Yucatán brand, as the first important tangible result of the project.
At the same time, they worked together with the two professors of User Experience Design, Davide Genco and Venanzio Arquilla, for the creation of a future web page of the Centre along with its architecture, which will be launched and made public by the end of the project (June 2018)

To date, following the conclusion of last mission, in February 2018, the objectives of the project are becoming more and more defined, and the first results will be shared and made public in the coming months.
