Course

The Specializing Master is open to graduates with a degree awarded in the old educational system (equivalent to a Master of Science) and/or a laurea specialistica (equivalent to a MSc) who are interested in entering and working in fashion and design companies. The Specialising Master is also open to entrepreneurs and workers in the industry who have a degree (or equivalent educational qualification).

Training objectives

The aim of the Specializing Master is to expand a System of Skills aimed at innovation in textile products for the fashion sector and for public and domestic furnishing. These industrial design skills are aimed at product innovation that is not simply formal and aesthetic – material performance, comfort, function and ergonomics become innovative as well.
The aim is to provide participants with the design and organisational tools linked to the creative processes in fashion companies.

Didactic Plan

The teaching method is geared towards a progressive and comprehensive understanding of the subjects, and all themes discussed in classwill immediately be put into practice with exercises, group work and case studies. Vocational project work based on industry procedures will complete the learning process.
For the vocational project work element, students will be asked to create concepts and projects under the direct supervision of tutors and distinguished industry professionals, transferring the knowledge they have acquired in class into independent creative activities. Project briefs and key objectives will be established through case studies and real-life simulation.

Preparatory modules
UNIT 00: WARM UP
For the initial warm-up module students will be introduced to the pillars of Design and project culture in general, and will analyse recent approaches and learn the importance of strategy in design, not just as a retrospective design activity but as an effective project tool, right from the very early stages of the process (manufacturing or entrepreneurial).

Study modules
UNIT 01: TECH-STYLE DESIGN
This module will involve a brief examination of materials used in the textiles industry, including historic and cultural aspects, with particular focus on current sustainability issues.

UNIT 02: TEXTILE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF DETAILS
From raw material to finished textile, this 2nd module will focus on evaluating the basic techniques used in creating a fabric design, with practical activities in technical workshops at Politecnico Design Department.

UNIT 03: RESEARCH FOR TEXTILE DESIGN
The analysis of trends and lifestyles forms the basic content of this module which focuses on contemporary application contexts and new prospects for textile.

UNIT 04: COLOUR IN TEXTILE DESIGN
Colour plays a major role in textile design; it constitutes a conceptual “raw material” and the use of palettes and colour options can be fundamental to the success of a design proposal; this module develops the basic knowledge required to create a contemporary palette.

UNIT 05: INNOVATIVE EDITORIAL PLATFORM
Modern developments in industry language and communication will be the subject of detailed study in this module, with particular focus on the latest examples from the textile industry.

UNIT 06: MARKET AND TOTAL LIVING
In this module the newest innovations in the corporate sector and the study of the importance of distribution and retails as process final peaks will be analysed.

UNIT 07: VISUAL COMMUNICATION AND PROJECT REPRESENTATION TOOLS
In addition to some basic graphics elements and to the application of the most common graphics softwares, the unit will also cover new media and the opportunitiesthey  present  for business and product development.

UNIT 08: FABRICS, TECHNOLOGIES AND FINISHING
Starting with a brief history of textile technology and the main finishing  currently in use, the unit will also provide an overview of the latest innovations and technological developments in the technical sphere.

UNIT 09: FASHIONABLE TECHNOLOGY
So-called wearable technology will be one of the most fascinating developments in the textiles industry in the not-too-distant future, uniting technology with fashion and trends. The most relevant case studies from the sector will be analysed, focusing also on nanotechnology and newinterfaces.

Workshop modules
UNIT 10: PROFESSIONALIZING PROJECTS
A unique  opportunity to experiment with what was learned during the master’s course.
A major opportunity for sharing knowledge, networking and professional exchange, and for sharing information and updates on the development of jobs and market trends.
Projects will be divided into 5 main thematic areas to replicate the professional approach, in the fields of digital design and its application in the textiles industry, the use of new materials and the creation of innovative fabrics; textile applications for furniture and interior , and innovation in the use of classical and traditional techniques.

Title Released

The Specializing Master grants 60 CFU, equivalent to 60 ECTS. Upon completion, students earn a Politecnico di Milano first-level Specializing Master.

Employment Opportunities

The Specializing Master aims at training a professional figure who has what IBM calls “T-Shaped skills”, i.e. a combination between broadness of knowledge and depth of understanding. These professionals have specific skills in the field of fashion, design and interiors and can perceive the changes in behaviour and needs of modern society, systematizying them in a planning key for the development of innovative projects.

Admission

Requirements

The Specializing Master is open to candidates who have a university degree under the old or the new educational system or a Master of Science under the new educational system in Science, Engineering, Architecture, Industrial Design (or equivalent qualifications under the law), or in other disciplines where the Master course is complementary to the candidate’s previous experiences.
For foreign applicants, the Master is open to students holding equivalent qualifications.

The selection will be made by the Commission.
The selection will be made through CV verification and an individual interview.
It will be an asset to be in possession of a projects portfolio and the knowledge of the English language.

Price

The total cost of the course is equal to € 19.500

The cost is split into:
Contribution for enrolment in the Politecnico di Milano – € 500 per student
Master tuition fees – € 19.000 per student
