Erin McAuliffe holds a PhD in Design from Politecnico di Milano and a Master of Design (Design Strategies) from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
She has worked applying design to public services and policies for over 15 years, including with governments in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and across Europe, as well as with international humanitarian and development organisations. She has worked on design projects relating to themes like climate, food systems, social services, urban issues, mobility, housing, health and ageing, tax and customs, and border and national security. Her research focuses on how advocates, activists and community organisations can use design to bring about policy change. Erin was recognised in the ADI Index 2022 and Eccellenza Lombarde 2023 for the social design project La Cucina Collaborativa, alongside her colleagues from the Design Policy Lab.
Erin came to design after a 10-year career in government working on policy implementation, including with the Australian Prime Minister’s Department. Based in Milan, she works as an independent practitioner and researcher, and remains affiliated with Politecnico di Milan’s Design Policy Lab and POLI.design.
