AI4Gov Dialogue | Mastering AI Skills for the Public Sector

Generative AI and the emergence of increasingly agentic systems are rapidly changing what it means to work with AI in government. Yet public administrations and GovTech companies not only need more AI specialists; they also need professionals across policy, management, service design, procurement, and operations who understand how to use AI effectively and responsibly. “Mastering AI Skills for the Public Sector” explores this issue and the opportunities it creates.

This AI4Gov Dialogue outlines the new set of AI skills required of non-specialists working in and around the public sector. Beyond basic AI literacy, this means being able to understand what AI systems can and cannot do, identify where they can create public value, formulate problems and requirements effectively, work with data and AI-enabled tools, assess risks and trade-offs, and maintain meaningful human oversight as systems become more autonomous.

In particular, the talk will focus on how Generative AI and agentic AI are shifting the skills frontier: from simply interacting with individual tools towards orchestrating AI-supported workflows, evaluating outputs, governing automated processes, and integrating AI into organisations and public services. We’ll discover what these changes mean for public-sector professionals today and how education and training need to evolve to prepare the AI-enabled public workforce of the future.
